Overview:
K-LiteTK
is a privately held company, founded in 1999, with a dozen
employees throughout offices in Newark and Montreal.
Features:
Product Usability: It's difficult to rate them
on product usability, as it was not
clear which product they offered. We were directed
to several different products we could use, and in some
cases were advised that we should not even be using that
product!
File
availability: There
were a few obscure tracks we had difficulty locating, and
at the time of writing this review, we
had not heard back from Support on what we could
do to locate these files.
File
Quality/Usability: We
found the quality and usability of the files to be above
average. At times we ended up getting files that had static
and screeching sounds embedded within them, however we learned
from experiences with other services that there
are utilities to detect these corrupted files.
Download
speeds: Using a T1
(very fast) Internet connection, we didn't experience any
delays in getting files, however sometimes they would get
'queued' up while others were downloading the file at the
same time. After searching for the
file again on a different source we were able to download
it rather quickly.
Software
compatibility: K-LiteTK
offers software for most versions of Windows (95, 98, ME,
NT, 2000 and XP), as well as Mac (OS X and Classic) and
Linux.
Member
Benefits: K-LiteTK
provides access to many different programs from their member
site, but the only incentive we found was a free music player
program, which turned out to be a free 'skin' for Winamp.
Cost:
Purchase/Registration:
K-LiteTK
understands that not all consumers have access to a credit
card, and in fact many consumers are still hesitant to make
purchases online. For this reason, they offer an electronic
check payment option along with paying by credit card.
Product/Service
Costs: K-LiteTK
offers 3 payment options, including a $39.95
Unlimited Lifetime package,
$24.95 2 year download package and a $19.95
1 year download package. Their Unlimited Lifetime
package is the highest
package price we have seen. They also want to charge you
an additional $9.95 just to
get access to movie downloads, and another $9.95
to make backup copies of your DVDs. When all is said and
done, you could be shelling out $60.00
for your membership!
Exchange/Refund
Policy: We
could not find much information on K-LiteTK's
refund policy, but verbiage on their website indicates that
they do not offer any refunds.
They do state that if you are not satisfied you can cancel
your membership at any time and keep the software, but there
is no mention of a refund.
Support:
Customer Service: We've only dealt with their Customer
Service team on one occasion (when we requested access for
this review), however they responded
promptly and courteously, offering whatever we needed
to complete this review.
Technical
Support: We're not sure how many employees K-LiteTK
actually allocates to their Support team, as all initial
communication was with the same person, and it
appears to be a personal email account we are sending our
requests to. In some cases the so-called 'Customer
Support Center' form was not even accessible (and it's not
a form...just a link to an email address). Having said this,
they did respond to our requests within
24 hours, and offered a reasonable solution to our
problem.
Online
Help/FAQs:
We
would rate their online help feature as slightly above average.
The members-only website is easy to navigate, however the
instructions in many cases are weak, and tailored to one
of the products that we were not even using.
